7 Ways to Differentiate a Good Leader from a Bad Leader
Hello There!
We are going to discuss the differentiation between good leaders and bad leaders. Of course, there is a not a clear demarcation. However the paradigm differentiating the two, helps us to understand what is the most appropriate form of leadership.
What are the qualities of a good leader? What makes a bad leader? Differentiating between good leaders and bad leaders can make all the difference in team building. Let’s look at how effective leaders manage the skills, at which bad leaders fail.
1. Good leaders let every member of a team know that their contribution is valuable and appreciated. Giving credit to team members for their work motivates them to given even more since they know that their discretionary effort will be appreciated. Bad leaders consistently try to make their teammates feel like they are at a deficit and always running behind. This approach will burn out good employees due to a lack of specific and realistic goals.
2. Leaders who excel often inspire their team members to their fullest potential by focusing on the unique positive abilities and attributes of the team members and ensuring alignment in a positive way. Terrible leaders ignore the existing talents and skills of their team members and try to force them into roles that they are poorly suited to fill. Everyone has talents, a good leader focuses on ensuring that the people they lead align with roles that complement their talents.
3. Bad leaders bark orders and expect them to be followed without question. Good leaders expect and accept challenging of their ideas by team members and welcome collaborative dialogue regarding ideas and opportunities for growth.
4. A great leader allows the rest of his/ her team in on the goal. Connecting all work assigned with the bigger picture gives team members ownership of the responsibility to meet the goal. Bad leaders feel threatened by sharing information. Shared leadership is a vital part of appropriate leadership development and succession planning, which I address in another vlog. Ultimately, good leaders leverage shared leadership for more success, whereas bad leaders miss out on such a benefit.
5. A great leader accepts responsibility if the team fails in any way. Lousy leaders blame their team even if the leader is personally responsible.
6. Excellent leaders care more about what their team achieved than a strict ritual being followed. Bad leaders are far more concerned with making sure that a rigid process is followed than the potential of results being reached.
7. Bad leaders ignore or are ignorant to the potential of their team members. Good leaders identify future leaders on their teams and help team members to develop leadership skillsets.
